CMC´S NEWS' REVIEW (II)

Scientific shield: 3D printers and biology
Date: 20/10/2014
Summary

Scientists have done an incredible medical advance, they create the first implant of a vertebra made with a 3D printer. The patient was a kid who has got a cancer. Scientists don't know how will the artificial vertebra behave in his body but maybe, this will be the future of the implants. They are trying to do that the artificial and natural vertebras works together. The vertebra was do with micropores and scientist say that is not necessary to fix it with any screw, it will be another part of the patient´s body, like all the other vertebras.

Critical Appraisal

I think is a very good notice because it´s a great solution if it works good. We can do some bones with a 3D printer who can change the life of persons who has broken her leg, her arm, a finger...
It´s like a cyborg of science fiction filmes in the real life. Science is always improving and think that this new idea will work perfectly.

Glossary:
Micropores- a tiny opening, as in specialized biological filters or in the shells of some animals.
Screw-  a nail-shaped or rod-shaped piece with a spiral groove and a slotted or recessed head designed to be inserted into material by rotating and used for fastening pieces of solid material together

Ambulance Work in Liberia Is a Busy and Lonely Business

The New Work Times                                                                                              19/10/14

SCIENTIFIC SHIELD: Biology, medical

SUMMARY
The article explains how Mr. Kamara treats Ebola patients with his ambulance. What is really unexpected is that Kamara doesn't work for the government. He does not even have a dispatcher to tell him where to go, or which patients to pick up.  Instead, his team is financed by an opposition member of Parliament, Saah. Joseph and he work for people.
He doesn't earn money for this but he says if i make nothing they'll die.

CRITICAL APPRAISAL:
I'm surprised to see that there are still good people in the world. Kamara risks his life to save others. I think that there's no nobler way to live.
When you can say that you saved a life you  can rest in peace.
In this world that only the money move things, people like Mr. Kamara  makes me think that we still have hope.

While governments make only matter if ebola arrives to their countries there are hospitals that can't treat all the ebola paciens and some people have to give his life trying to save other.

In the next video we can see a "tipical day" in Liberia driving Kamara's ambulance:

GLOSSARY:
Ebola: A family of viruses that cause a deadly disease in people. Most cases occur in Africa and Asia. Its symptoms include headaches, fever, muscle pain and extensive bleeding. The infection spreads from person to person (or animal to some person) through contact with infected body fluids.

News' title: Space clouds may hold clue to life's origins.

Date of publication: October 13, 2014.

Scientific field: Chemistry and astronomy

Extract:

A branched molecule has been found in a cloud called Sagittarius B2. This cloud sits about 26,000 light-years away in interstellar space. The molecule found there is an isopropyl cyanide. The term isopropyl means that a single atom from a branch may connect to two or three others. This molecules are the basic building block for proteins, that are as well crucial to life.
Finding out those molecules wasn't an easy task. The movement of those molecules produced energy, that in turn took the form of radio waves. The study, set in the mountains of Chile, picked up and identified those radio waves.

Critical appraisal:

This article talks about a recent science discovery in the astronomy field, the finding of a branched molecule in an interstellar cloud.
I think that this finding gives hope to find life someday in other planets of the Universe, as organic molecules are the bases of life as we know. Besides, having found a molecule in a planet which is about 26,000 light-year demostrates the research capacity of science, which is developing very rapidly in the last decades, and the pointer equipment they use. I'd also like to point out the clear correlation between science and technology. I believe it's like a kind of cooperation in which both components help each other to get to knowledge. For example, I'm sure that the improvement of the telescopes and other techniques has helped a lot to discover what hides in other galaxies.
On the other hand, there are bad sides in this news. Scientists have been able to identify this molecule, but I guess that the incredibly large distance will prevent them from analysing and studying the situation more deeply. Moreover, I found that this kind of news, and, by extension, all science news, have really little impact in media. I think the journalistic world should give more importance to this fields to inform people of the latest scientific advances.

Glossary:
- Aminoacids: simple molecules that occur naturally in plant and animal tissues and that are the basic constituents of proteins.
- Chemical: a substance formed from two or more atoms that unite (become bonded together) in a fixed proportion and structure. For example, water is a chemical made of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. Its chemical symbol is H2O.
- Interstellar: between stars.
- Isopropyl cyanide: also known as isobutyronitrile, it has a chemical formula of (CH3)2CHCN. It is very toxic. On Earth, it forms during an intermediate stage of the production of some chemicals, including some insecticides.
- Milky Way: the galaxy in which Earth’s solar system resides.
- Proteins: compounds made from one or more long chains of amino acids. Proteins are an essential part of all living organisms. They form the basis of living cells, muscle and tissues; they also do the work inside of cells.
- Radio waves: waves in a part of the electromagnetic spectrum; they are a type that people now use for long-distance communication. Longer than the waves of visible light, radio waves are used to transmit radio and television signals; it is also used in radar.

Científics creen un dispositiu d'invisiblitat capaç d'ocultar objectes

LaVanguardia.com                                                                                                                                            03/10/2014

SCIENTIFIC SHIELD: Tecnology

 SUMMARY
The report exlains how a cientific group made a gadget that allow us to hide objects through the combinacion of four lenses.
In this way we can talk about a false invisibility created by optical illusions.
The invisibility created by the cientifics reaches 15º and let us see what is in the deep without deformation.

CRITICAL ASSESSMENT
This system created by the University of Rochester has its advantages and disadvantages.

We can  hide objects in this way and use it for security or shows. The creator John Howell thiks that it could have multiple applications, including its use as a surgeon can look through his hands or a driver of a truck to do the same through his vehicle's blind spots. In case if you give any of these functions would be awesome.
It could be a technological, medical and scientific advancement.

If you can not make good use could be used for espionage or other.

GLOSSARY:
Lenses: A lens is a thin curved piece of glass or plastic used in things such as cameras, telescopes, and pairs of glasses. You look through a lens in order to make things look larger, smaller, or clearer.
Invisibility: That is not visible,we can't see it with the eyes.
Optical illusions: An optical illusion is something that tricks your eyes so that what you think you see is different from what is really there.

Extract:
Rosetta is a robotic space probe built and launched by the European Space Agency. It's formed by two principal parts: the orbital probe and the surface probe. The orbital part was called "Pedra de Rosetta"  because her objectives are to explain the begging of the first stages of the solar system. His sending information from the comet  Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The other part of the space probe (the surface probe called Philea) will arrive to his destination on november, this year.

Critical appraisal:
I think there's good because humans wants to know about all they can and this space probe, can be the solution or the answer of the one of the most important question the ever exists. How has been formed the solar system? It was a explosion called big bang? It was a god? Maybe this space probe can give us the answer.

Glossary:
Space probe- is an unmanned spacecraft that leaves Earth orbit and explores space.

News' title: Ebola update: Signs of hope.

Date of publication: September 12, 2014.

Source of information: Student Society for Science:

Scientific field: Biology and medicine

Extract:

The article explains the last-hour news of the Ebola's outbreak in West Africa, which has already caused 2400 deaths. A group of scientists analyze where the epidemic started, and they found out that it was probably due to a boy infected by an animal in Guinea. Furthermore, they achieve isolating Ebola viruses from people who contracted the disease in the early weeks of the outbreak. They discover that the viruses' genes were changing rapidly while the disease spread. In spite of the difficulty in finding a vaccine, it seems that treatment may be coming in two or three months time, as now it's been tested quite satisfactorily with animals. So, although it's a fatal outbreak that can carry on spreading for six to nine months, the last studies show there's still hope.

Critical appraisal:

Although it's said that there are lots of Ebola's researches going on at the moment, and there's been new discoveries, I actually think that's not enough. I'm not saying scientists aren't getting sufficiently involved in the investigations, as they clearly do. In my opinion, it has to do with presidents and ministers from all over the world, that prefer to look aside and ignore once more the forgotten continent.

I bet that if the outbreak has come out in Europe or North-America, it'll be far more under-control. So, the thing is, we have to start worrying about someone else but ourselves, if we want that imminent danger to fade away.

Glossary:

-Ebola   A family of viruses that cause a deadly disease in people. Most cases occur in Africa and Asia. Its symptoms include headaches, fever, muscle pain and extensive bleeding. The infection spreads from person to person (or animal to some person) through contact with infected body fluids.
-Epidemic  A widespread outbreak of an infectious disease that sickens many people in a community at the same time.
-Gene   (adj. genetic)A segment of DNA that codes, or holds instructions, for producing a protein. Offspring inherit genes from their parents. Genes influence how an organism looks and behaves.
-Genetic  Having to do with chromosomes, DNA and the genes contained within DNA. The field of science dealing with these biological instructions is known as genetics.
-Genome  The complete set of genes or genetic material in a cell or an organism.
-Germ  Any one-celled microorganism, such as a bacterium, fungal species or virus particle. Some germs cause disease. Others can promote the health of higher-order organisms, including birds and mammals. The health effects of most germs, however, remain unknown.
-Outbreak    The sudden emergence of disease in a population of people or animals.
